Consarn it! Gabby Hayes Was One of Duke's Greatest Co-Stars

A handful of actors were featured alongside John Wayne in multiple films. One of the most beloved was George "Gabby" Hayes (1885-1969), a character actor who appeared in 13 Wayne films from 1933 to 1944. Known mostly for his roles as a crusty old coot spouting "Dagnabbit" and "Consarn it," he could play a debonair gentleman or a judge as easily as a bewhiskered gold miner. He was a frequent sidekick to Hopalong Cassidy, Roy Rogers, and Randolph Scott, but he loved working with Wayne. "He's my boy," Hayes once said about Duke. "He's the best. Couldn't think more of him if he was my own son."
