Go ahead and call it pale red, Or salmon, Or dusty rose. The fact is, John Wayne liked to wear pink throughout his film career. And why not? Covered in dust from a desert trail, no laundry service since leaving San Antonio before the spring green-up, he would have looked as brown and ordinary as a chunk of hillside from the San Juans--except for the pink. Usually it was a shirt, with either a single row of buttons or the iconic double-row bib-front shirts that he favored. Sometimes he put on a bright neckerchief (also see Hondo for a neckerchief that was pretty darn colorful) in a bit of unexpected dandyism. Go ahead and just call it pink! Besides, are you going to tell Duke what colors he can wear?
